The Ka Pilina camp @ Burning Man is BACK!

Going to Burning Man 2007? Want to camp with a bunch of other Hawaii burners at the Hawaii Regional Embassy on the playa?

Now is your chance! The Ka Pilina camp will be making it's 4th consecutive appearance on the playa. It looked like we were not going to make it this year but a few dedicated local burners would not let that happen. We are not going to be a village and the camp is downsized a bit from previous years as we are trying to take a different approach this year.

We will be relying on campers to be self-reliant, meaning there will be next to nothing that the camp will provide (mainly organizing the space and putting up flags). Each camper is expected to not only come prepared (your OWN shade, food, water, showers, evaporation ponds, etc.) but also to carry away all the garbage in the camp whether it is yours or not.

The camp
We are going for a lot 200' x 200' and we are going to cap it at 125-150 people. Mike Maung is returning with his mega-art with Lawnmower II, a 25' tall sculpture lit up with EL wire. We will have 3 "mini-themecamps" within our themecamps this year: Han's Hippie Fishing Bait and Tackle, the Hawaiian Awa Hut, and Inflatuland. We hope to be on a corner again with Mike's sculpture near the point. The 3 mini-themecamps will be across an open area (for any fire performance and the luau) in an arc facing the sculpture. The most interactive elements will get the most frontage with more private camping towards the rear. We will most likely be back from the playa as in years' past but that means we are also more likely to by near but not too close to the portapotties.

The 5th annual Friday sunset luau
We decided that after being a "soup kitchen for stoners" (like 750-1000 of them) we are going to go back to the roots of the luau which is more like a "stone soup" type of thing. We are asking for everyone who wishes to participate in the luau to bring something to share as in food and/or beverages. We want to get back to the luau being a place and time for local Hawaii burners to meet each other in a relaxing and friendly environment. We never intended the luau to be just a "big party" we throw for all Black Rock City. Everyone is welcome to attend, but we just want to be clear what the luau is about, participants contributing and people (especially kama'aina) connecting.

Get involved
Want to be part of a growing legend at Burning Man? Join the Ka Pilina camp today! The camp is being organized by:

Geoff Hearl (maui@kapilina.org)
Seth Lahne (oahu@kapilina.org)
John Corbin (hawaii@kapilina.org)

Contact them with any of your questions and if you want to sign up.

We will also have a page on our website (www.kapilina.org) soon with more of the details, and possibly a way to register for the camp (maybe the luau too?).

We also have a discussion list on Yahoo Groups just for the Ka Pilina camp. Go to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/kapilinacamp/ and join the group.

As always there will also be lots of discussion about it on our Tribe (our main discussion forum) at http://kapilina.tribe.net.

WCW and NION @ Gay Pride

I know that 9AM on a Sat is pretty early for most of you...

Gay Pride Parade: Saturday, June 24, 9 am

World Can't Wait-Hawai`i will have a contingent in the Gay Pride Parade this Saturday, June 24th. We invite all World Can't Wait and Not In Our Name supporters to join the contingent with its 8 bright green banners with each of the "your government" statements from the World Can't Wait Call (http://www.worldcantwait.net) and to pass out the Call to Drive Out the Bush Regime.

Especially in light of a recently uncovered Pentagon document classifying homosexuality as a mental disorder, to identify as a homosexual is increasingly becoming a crime in the United States. Under the Bush Regime and its Christian fundamentalist counterparts in power, discriminatory hiring practices regarding sexuality abound. Violent hate crimes committed against the LGBTQ community are constant. Hundreds of servicemen and women are discharged from the military each year under a "Don't ask, don't tell" policy.

Now, the Pentagon is breaking with widely accepted scientific thought and simply tolerance in general, by returning to the classification of homosexuality as a disorder or mental illness. In the document, a "Defense Department Instruction" manual, homosexuality is listed with other "defects." The medical community withdrew this classification from the books decades ago, and has widely refuted the Pentagon's archaic and bigoted claim. For more information on the Pentagon's classification, see TruthOut

The LGBT community can't wait, and neither can the world! Drive out the Bush Regime!

The parade begins at Magic Island (Ala Moana Park) at 9 am and will go through Waikiki to Kapiolani Park. Just look for the green banners and NION flags. There will be buses from Kapiolani Park back to Ala Moana Park, where there will be an afternoon of entertainment, information booths and food at McCoy Pavilion throughout the afternoon. There will be little parking at Magic Island but you can usually find a space at Ala Moana Shopping Center.

The 2006 Ka Pilina camp at Burning Man

Going to Burning Man this year?

Calling all kama'aina on the islands and in the mainland, the 2006 Ka Pilina camp (aka the Hawaii Regional Embassy) has been officially registered with Burning Man and is open to accept camp members. The camp will be able to hold 150-200 members and it will again be organizing by small groups. This is the biggest and best home on the playa for island burners, whether it is your first time on the playa or not. This will only be the 3rd year for the camp but already our Friday sunset luau is a legend in Black Rock City, and this year's luau will be even better than ever. This is your best opportunity all year to meet burners from all the islands at once.

Go to www.kapilina.org/kapilina/tcamp06.html to get all the details about the camp and got to our Tribe (kapilina.tribe.net) to add your name to the signup list in the discussion forum. We have also created a new email list on Yahoo just for the Ka Pilina camp, you can join it by going here: groups.yahoo.com/group/kapilinacamp/.

We are planning on the 2006 Ka Pilina camp returning to the 4:30 area but being much closer to the playa without actually being on the Esplanade. We are going for the same type spot as in 2005 (2 corners on 4:30) but between the 2nd and 3rd streets (counting the Esplanade as the 1st) and slightly larger on the side opposite of 4:30. Check out the layout (www.kapilina.org/pix/06KP-...out01.gif) it is designed to have a large open art and performance and art car area in front while providing a more private camping area in the rear or center of the camp.

We need your help!

For the first time we will be asking for voluntary donations from camp members. The camp is NOT highly centrally organized and the whole thing really only works if small prepared groups come together to form our large community. So what is money needed for? What will you get for your suggested donation of $20? Well for one, any donation of $20 or more will get you a camp laminate, a t-shirt, and stickers, just for you (bag of schwag). This year we are going to face a need for storage for the first time as our camp has grown and we are beginning to strain the goodwill of individuals storing stuff for us for free. Storage will cost money. We also would like to do an art grant program for the camp to help subsidize art members are bringing to make our front public area come alive. Also the luau will cost some money for the pig and stuff like tables and such. In the end, the more money we can raise, the more we can do.

Donations are strictly voluntary, it is not a prerequisite for camping with us. It is up to you, if you want to camp with Ka Pilina on the playa and help make it the best it can be, or if you are not going and just support the art we are doing there please give us a camp donation by going to: www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr and remember, if our tax status comes through in a month or so, any donations for the past 6 months will be tax deductible.

So sign up for the camp today if you are in, we already have 42 confirmed members already and we are going to cap our camp at around 150. Help us bring some aloha to the playa see www.kapilina.org/kapilina/tcamp06.html for all of the details.

a hui hou,

HOOPING @ Kokua 4/22

It's turned out that I don't have a ticket for the festival after all.
And at this point I am not really incllined to shell out a bunch of cash only to have to deal with amateur night inside the venue.
Instead I've decided to donate the $100 the scalpers are charging to The Kokua Foundation to support what Jack's trying to do for our kids here in Hawaii.
So... I thought I'd call a not-so-impromtu HOOP SESSION in the park outside the show.
I've been told that you can hear the music just as well behind the shell, only minus all the yuppies and tourists.

Anybody with me!?!!!!

I'm thinking I'll head down to Kapiolani Park at 2 or 3PM
and stay until the show lets out.
Look for the hoopers or else call me tomrrow
for a more specific location.

hoopers or aspiring hoopers on Oahu?

So... I just made the big move from SF to Honolulu and it appears that there is not a Hawaii hoop group as of yet. I am willing to create one but wanted to see if there are already other hoopers here in the 808 state who'd be interested in a regular gathering or maybe want to co-moderate with me???

Since I am relatively new to hooping, myself, I'd really love to have input from some more seasoned girls and guys. And I did bring 10 hoops over with me so there's enough to get some newbies started as well.

You can post here or email me directly.

Thanks and hoopy love to all!

Ok, as of January we are moving from SF to Hawaii. We are a gay couple been together 20 years, and our 3 cats. We expect to make the jump first then have the cats shipped later. We are a High Tech couple, needing DSL in the apartment and a software/internet related job would be nice. As we are still in SF it would be nice to know of some online resources that might help us in all directions.

Thanx,

Kim Taylor Reece, Winner of the PIFA (Pacific Islander Festival
Association) 2005 Artist of the Year Award at the San Diego Pacific
Islander Festival.
http://gallery133688.fotopic.net/c706601.html

Kim Taylor Reece, Hawaii's foremost fine art photographer, has
been studying hula kahiko for nearly 25 years. A catalyst of
Hawaii's Cultural Renaissance, his photography captures the
mystery and magic of this dance, which for generations has excited
the imaginations of people around the world.

In his research, Kim has traveled with the Hawaii State Foundation of
Culture and the Arts, enabling him to study and work with dancers from
more than 37 different Pacific Islands. His extensive research of
costumes and dances of the early Hawaiians captures the spirit and
essence of this ancient ritual.

His unique style has established the visual standards for hula kahiko.
As millions encounter Kim's work everyday, it helps to preserve
the hula and enrich lives with his fine art photography.

Kim's award winning photography has brought him worldwide
recognition. Over the years, Kim has received 15 Pele Awards
(communication and arts), Print Magazine Awards, Kahili Awards (HVCB),
Travel Journalism Awards and National Community Service Awards. His
images have been acquired by collectors, dignitaries, and museums
internationally.

He studied art at Long Beach State in California and because he is
color-blind was told to "change majors or be a starving artist". He
uses it to his advantage in capturing the subtleties of the kahiko in
black and white. He uses sepia tone to represent the timelessness of
the dance. Kim has been publishing his art prints since 1983.

Kim has a gallery at Sacred Falls, Oahu, Hawaii. "The beauty in nature
of the lush green valley and the striking blue ocean exemplifies what
I am trying to portray through my work." Says the artist of his remote
location.

For those who appreciate hula, Kim Taylor Reece has devoted his
talents to the celebration of Hawaii's ancient dance.
Caroline Young: In classical Oriental painting, artists approach
their work the way pianists in the West might approach the existing
compositions of the great masters. Each new painting was a
performance that the artist rehearsed for by practicing the
performance of earlier painters. Contemporary artist Caroline Young
took that wisdom to heart. Her delicate watercolors on silk pay
homage to classical Chinese technique called the "delicate style,"
and the lessons she learned from her mentor, Lam Oi Char. Each is a
virtuoso celebration.

Hey, some friends and me have stumbled across this beautiful quiet home in Kahala. It is a 4 bedroom 3 bathroom house, located about 2 blocks from the beach and a good 5 minutes by car to Waikiki. There is lots of living space, a nice swimming pool and backyard, a large kitchen with new appliances.... the place is really nice with lots of space and good energy and we have 2 rooms left for rent for $ 800 + utilities... So far there are 3 of us, I won't be there for the next half year as I am going on a worldtour. So if any of you are interested please let me know! My email is

transplanting your car as well?

yup the one with many questions again :)

I have a 94 BMW blue book is prob. about 2k on it, the roof is ripped in the back window, there's no stereo, and there's a leak in the power steering fluid, so by no means is it in good condition BUT it's paid off and my insurance is dirt cheap..

I am subleasing a place for the summer, its in Pearl City on Apoepoe place, there is a busline one street over. The lease is thru Sept 1 and optimistically, I would like to think that I will stay but there's an opportunity to go to China for a few months too.

My question, is it worth it to ship your car over? Do you find getting around on the bus to be easy? I've been pretty spoiled and have always relied on my car to go to the beach or store whenever, so it would be an adjustment to not have wheels and instant access to transportation. I work from the house on a computer, so a car would be good for food shopping, going out, etc.

How necessary is a car and/or have you found the bus system takes care of your needs?

I've also thought about selling my car here in SF, then buying a hunk of junk for a couple hundred dollars on the island just to get around in. At least on craigslist there seems to be a fair amount of motivated sellers wanting to sell cars for cheap.

Aloha, I am waiting to hear back about a summer sublet right now, cross your fingers that it is mine and I will soon be there :) Sooo excited,

so now I have a question, the sublease is til the end of August, so I would be looking for another place in Sept that is more permanent (unless I go to China instead which is possible).

? Is it easier to find another rental once I am on the island

? Best places to look other than craigslist

? Do places fill up quickly in Sept because of school starting up?
